Marques,C.M.M.; Motta,V.F.; Torres,T.S.; Aguila,M.B.; Mandarim-de-Lacerda,C.A..
C57BL/6 mice develop signs and symptoms comparable, in part, to the human metabolic syndrome. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of exercise training on carbohydrate metabolism, lipid profile, visceral adiposity, pancreatic islet alterations, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in C57BL/6 mice. Animals were fed one of two diets during an 8-week period: standard (SC, N = 12) or very high-fat (HF, N = 24) chow. An exercise training protocol (treadmill) was then established and mice were divided into SC and HF sedentary (SC-Sed, HF-Sed), exercised groups (SC-Ex, HF-Ex), or switched from HF to SC (HF/SC-Sed and HF/SC-Ex). HF/HF-Sed mice had the greatest body mass (65% more than SC/SC-Sed; P < 0.0001), and exercise reduced it by...

Determination of Lateral Ventricle and Brain Volume in Children with Stereological Method Using MRI International Journal of Morphology
Karacan,Keziban; Kosar,Mehmet Ilkay; Çimen,Mehmet; Solak,Orhan; Sahin,Bünyamin.
Although brain development is most active during the intrauterina period of life, the processes of myelination and arborization affect the structure of the brain throughout childhood and adolescence. Brain development is also very active in the early years of a child's life, and continues to be so for approximately 15 years after gestation. Volumetric changes in the brain are effected by sex. Understanding the variability of human brain volume during development is important for the interpretation of childhood neuroimaging studies. Hence the aim of this study is to determine the effects of sex difference on brain volume (BV), lateral ventricle volume (LV) and the ratio of brain volume and lateral ventricle volumes as a percentage (RLBV%) of 90 healthy...

Disector Z-axis mechanical method for stereology Anais da ABC (AABC)
Xavier-Vidal,Ricardo.
The purpose of this work is to calibrate a not expensive microscope to be applied in Optical Disector estimation. The evaluation of "Z-axis" bias and the "Z-axis" calibration were made utilizing a cover slip and a "manual digimatic outside micrometer scale" (Mitutoyo, Japan). Calibrating the cover slip we performed the calibration of the "Z-axis" of a microscope. In the cover slip two lines were painted with different colors using a pen glass. A blue line was painted on the up surface and another line (red) on the bottom surface of the cover slip forming a cross. Two metal rings with one palette welded in each were adapted in the microscope. Other palette was welded in the gross focuses in order to restrict the route of the fine focuses (Z-axis study)...

Early effects of estrogen on the rat ventral prostate BJMBR
García-Flórez,M.; Oliveira,C.A.; Carvalho,H.F..
Complex interactions between androgen and estrogen (E2) regulate prostatic development and physiology. We analyzed the early effects of a high single dose of E2 (25 mg/kg body weight) and castration (separately or combined) on the adult 90-day-old male Wistar rat ventral prostate. Androgen levels, prostate weight, and the variation in the relative and absolute volume of tissue compartments and apoptotic indices were determined for 7 days. Castration and exogenous E2 markedly reduced ventral prostate weight (about 50% of the control), with a significant reduction in the epithelial compartment and increased stroma. The final volume of the epithelium was identical at day 7 for all treatments (58.5% of the control). However, E2 had an immediate effect, causing...

Ribas,Paulo; Lopes,Ruberval A.; Sala,Miguel A.; Ribas,Lucia M.R.; de Mattos,Maria da Glória C.; Semprini,Marisa; Watanabe,Ii-Sei; Regalo,Simone C.H..
Cadmium in the air, drinking water and food has the potential to affect the health of people, mainly those who live in highly industrialized regions. Cadmium affects placental functions, can cross the placental barrier and directly disturbs fetal development. It is also excreted into milk. The organism is particularly susceptible to cadmium exposure at perinatal period. The effect on rat maxillary molar junctional epithelium a continuous exposure to drinking water containing low level of cadmium during lactation was studied. Female rats received drinking water ad libitum containing 300 mg/l CdCl2 throughout the whole lactation. Control animals received a similar volume of water without cadmium. Lactent rats (21 day-old) were killed by lethal dose of...

Effects of Oral Nicotine on Rat Liver Stereology International Journal of Morphology
Valenca,Samuel Santos; Gouveia,Lucas; Alves Pimenta,Wagner; Porto,Luís Cristóvão.
Nicotine is the more abundant component in cigarette smoke. Because nicotine is first metabolized in the liver, our aim was to investígate the effects of nicotine on this organ by biochemical and stereological methods. Male Wistar rats were treated with oral nicotine (ON) diluted in drinking water during 32 days. The control group was treated with drinking water in the same period. Rats were sacrificed 24 hours after last day, the blood was collected and the liver was removed. Lipidogram was performed by enzymatic method and collagen fibers, fat globules and hepatocytes were count in the liver by stereological methods. We observed in control group preserved hepatocytes, with no presence of inflammatory cells. However in the ON group was possible to observe...

Effects of Preweaning Polysensorial Enrichment upon Development of the Parietal Cortical Plate of Undernourished Rats: A Stereological Study International Journal of Morphology
González,Héctor; Adaro,Luis; Hernández,Alejandro; Fernández,Víctor.
This investigation was undertaken in order to quantify the effects of early polysensorial enrichment on the development of cortical pyramids, located in the parietal cortex of rats simultaneously submitted to protein-energy undernutrition. A short period of stimulation during suckling significantly decreases the cellular density in the cortical plate (phylogenetic-ontogenetic evolutionary index). Results suggest that the cerebral cortex develops according to a sophisticated neuronal network, which exhibits a notable degree of structural specificity, regulated by genetic and environmental clues. The most obvious prediction is that environmental influences are probably transduced as a structural expression in the developing parietal cortical plate.

ENALAPRIL AND VERAPAMIL ATTENUATE THE AORTIC WALL REMODELING IN NITRIC OXIDE DEFICIENCY International Journal of Morphology
Meirelles Pereira,Leila Maria; Gonçalves Bezerra,Daniele; Mandarim-de-Lacerda,Carlos Alberto.
Forty mature male rats (Wistar strain) were maintained alive for 40 days, separated in four groups of five rats each (Control, L-NAME, L-NAME + Enalapril, L-NAME + Verapamil). Three aortic wall parameters were analyzed, as follows: the Q A(SMN) (the number of the tunica media smooth muscle nuclear profiles per area), the S V(lamellae) (surface density of the aortic lamellae), and the aortic wall thickness (AWT). Rats of the L-NAME group showed high blood pressure and cardiac hypertrophy. The AWT, the Q A(SMN) and the S V(lamellae) showed the same tendency among the groups. The increased AWT, or the reduced Q A(SMN) and the S V(lamellae) in l-NAME rats were not completely prevented by the administration of enalapril or verapamil. Hypertension causes the AWT...

Evaluation of Lumbar Vertebral Body and Disc: A Stereological Morphometric Study International Journal of Morphology
Gocmen-Mas,Nuket; Karabekir,Hamit; Ertekin,Tolga; Edizer,Mete; Canan,Yazici; Duyar,Izzet.
Anterior access to the L1-L5 vertebrae and disc spaces can be technically challenging, frequently requiring the use of an approach to a surgeon for an adequate exposure. The technique is used for lesion excision, corpectomy, vertebral body reconstruction with cages, realignment, and/or plating or screwing. For a successful anterior approach and a suitable instrumental design via screw, adequate morphometric knowledge about body of lumbar vertebrae and disc spaces and standardized volumetric data are also required for neurosurgeons. We aimed morphometric and volumetric evaluation of lumbar bodies and discs to contribute to a safe anterior approach during surgery. We evaluated vertebral body and disc morphometry using stereology in right-handed 25 adult...

Gametogenesis, reproductive investment, and spawning behavior of the Pacific giant oyster Crassostrea gigas: evidence of an environment-dependent strategy ArchiMer
Enriquez-diaz, M.; Pouvreau, Stephane; Chavez-villalba, J.; Le Pennec, M..
The progress of gametogenesis was studied in oysters Crassostrea gigas having the same origin (Tremblade), but cultured during 1 year in two distinctive French marine areas, the Baie des Veys and Marennes-Ol,ron. We assessed seasonal changes in the reproduction cycle on the basis of stereological techniques to estimate reproductive investment and measurement of gonad evolution area by quantitative histology. From a qualitative point of view, both oyster groups presented typical reproductive stages, but showed differential timing, in particular during the sequence of spawning and duration of the re-absorption stage. Oysters in Baie des Veys had a single partial spawning in August and a re-absorption stage that extended until winter. Oysters in...
